Photography Competition

THEME

YYou, citizen of the world, are an integral part of your natural and built environments; environments in which you grow and live. On a daily basis, you interact with places that incorporate physical characteristics, biological components, and socio-cultural and aesthetic associations.  You are an integral part of these environments given that you constitute what we term “cultural landscapes”.

In photographically portraying cultural landscapes, you present your audience with how you see the natural and/or built environment through your lens and how you shape the imprints of past civilizations on natural, semi-natural, and urbanized regions in Lebanon.  You reflect how you interact with coastal and terrestrial ecosystems, mountains and seashores, high peaks and deep valleys, forests and wetlands. You translate visually how you perceive the social dynamics in urban and rural areas; and how you transmit visual messages to raise awareness on the impact of humans on the landscape, and the importance of the conservation of cultural landscapes in Lebanon.

We invite you to submit photographs that relate to these four axes on Cultural landscapes:

Discovering imprints of civilization on the Lebanese landscape: ruins, ancient bridges and natural monuments, historical sites, etc.;

Exploring natural and semi-natural landscapes in Lebanon: mountains, valley, sandy dunes, rocky beaches, waterfall, forests, wetlands, agricultural terraces, and fields;

Sketching cultural landscapes in a fast-changing world: urbanized areas, waste disposal sites, loss of agricultural terraces (traditional agricultural), agricultural terraces/farming vs. modern agricultural field/farms, urban sprawl in remote areas like the Bekaa;

Investigating the impact of construction sectors and planning on cultural landscapes: Cityscape in ancient Beirut and ancient streets, unplanned construction (urban sprawl), destruction of old houses to construct new buildings, etc.;

This competition is an interfaculty event, organized by the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences at NDU, to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, which is set by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22nd, while raising awareness on the importance of cultural landscapes diversity and their conservation.

You can enter a minimum of one photograph and a maximum of four. Photos should be taken in landscape format and at a distance. Each picture can represent either one or all four axes cited above.
