CS2 POST-CONFERENCE TOURS
As the conference theme suggests, streets are traces of cities’ evolution and their civilisation. The selected post-conference tours aim to present two different experiences of streets in two coastal cities: Beirut and Byblos.
BYBLOS CITY CENTRE AND JEITA GROTTO

Byblos, (Jbeil) city is a Mediterranean city in the Mount Lebanon governorate. It is suggested that Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of the world since 5000 BC and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. You will visit its ancient port, Phoenician, Roman and Crusaders ruins. Today, Byblos is a modern city retaining its exciting historical past. It was declared as a resilient city by the Rockfeller Foundation (http://www.100resilientcities.org/cities/entry/byblos-resilience-challenge#/-_/). The name Byblos is Greek; papyrus received its early Greek name (Byblos,) from its being exported to the Aegean through Byblos. The Jeita Grotto is one among the biggest stalactites and stalagmites caves in the world. It is made of two limestone caves, upper galleries and a lower cave. The action of water in the limestone created cathedral-like vaults full of various sizes, colour and shape. The total length of the cave is more than 9000 m and was nominated as one of the new Seven Wonders of nature in 2011. This is a guided tour inside the heart beat of the streets of Beirut where you can enjoy the diversity and complexities of the city’s urban arteries and get immediate answers to some of the questions raised during the conference.
