Lord Byron and the Orient: A Seminar - LIR 620
The course is an
in-depth study of the Oriental peoples,
cultures, traditions, sites, climes, themes,
and colorings of Lord Byron’s” Eastern
Tales: The Bride of Abydos,” “The Giaour,”
“The Corsair,” and “Siege of Corinth.”
Short selections of other major works like
“Lara,” “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage,” and
“Don Juan,” which allude to the Orient,
will be studied as well. Students will
investigate Byron’s Oriental scholarship and his authenticity in representing the various
elements of the East.
