Visual Storytelling - LIR 626
An unexplored literary genre, the graphic
novel provides a unique interplay of words
and images whereby the narrative is
relayed through words accompanied by
illustrative art. The course will examine the
link between visuality and narrativity and will
focus on meaning, agency, representation,
semiotics, and myth. Students will study
the evolution of the genre, its structure,
language, and impact on today’s readers.
Authors might include the Pulitzer-Prize
winner Art Spiegelman, Raymond Briggs, R.
Crumb, Marjane Satrapi, Paul Auster, Jean
Baudrillard, Walter Benjamin, and Roland
