International Center for Human Sciences (CISH) – UNESCO, Byblos

Established in 1999 by UNESCO and Lebanon, the International Center for Human Sciences (CISH) – UNESCO, Byblos is an international social and human sciences research institution. Placed under the auspices of UNESCO, the ICHS enjoys, by its statutes, full academic freedom and diplomatic immunity.

The Centre has 2 goals: to contribute to the development of social and human sciences and to promote a culture of peace. To this end, it stimulates international cooperation and reinforces research capacities in different regions. The Center adopts a prospective approach in its search for answers to new challenges.

The CISH is also mandated to disseminate its results and encourage the creation and strengthening of networks of social and human sciences institute particularly in the field of democracy. To achieve this mission, it operates in close cooperation notably with the universities in the region and various international research networks.

The CISH is based in Byblos, a World Heritage site. Byblos is also the place that revealed the Phoenicians and the alphabet. The Center is currently housed in a historic Lebanese building inside the walls of the old city and offers facilities for meetings and research activities.
