Dr. Roberts' Biography
Dr. Richard J. Roberts is the Chief Scientific Officer at New England Biolabs, Massachusetts. After receiving his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1968 from Sheffield University, he became a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard. Roberts’ work on the transcription in Adenovirus-2 led to the discovery of split genes and mRNA splicing in 1977, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1993. Since then, Roberts has been involved in organizing Nobel initiatives to correct scientific misinformation and promote humanitarian causes. His recent campaign, supported by 160 Nobel Laureates, has been on the use of GMO techniques to improve plant-breeding practices for the developing world.
