The Division of Audio Visual Arts (DAVA) in the Faculty of Humanities (FH) at Notre Dame University-Louaize North Campus (NDU-NLC) organized between April 14 and 21, 2018, a film workshop/competition titled, “Film Language: How to Make Static Objects Speak.”
During the workshop, students learned and experienced the importance of cinema and the unspoken language used in productions, highlighting its role in delivering messages through the unsaid. The majority of participants were interested in pursuing majors in Cinematography, Script-writing, and Camera and Directing Aesthetics.
The workshop introduced students on how best to express their thoughts and words through motionless elements, which enhanced their creativity to create a real image. This art of expression is a new way of storytelling that does not require the use words; rather it relies on elements in motionless environment.
During the first session, students were taught camera techniques and on-ground shooting training, and shown how the camera can express an image through the unsaid. Students were given an entire week to prepare for the competition through building on research to shoot their ideas, followed by editing, and finalizing their projects for the Saturday session. A jury composed of lecturers and alumni viewed and evaluated the screened projects.
The wining students all received a scholarship grant to study at NDU: The first place winner received a 50 percent grant his first semester tuition, and the second and third place winners were each granted a 25 percent grant for their first semester.
