On February 12, the Faculty of Law and Political Science (FLPS) at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU) organized a roundtable discussion that included esteemed Lebanese Deputies: MP Dr. Michel Douaihy, MP Waddah Sadek, and MP Mark Daou. The event commenced with opening remarks by Mr. Majed Bou Hadir, Director of Public Affairs and Protocol at NDU, who introduced the guests and expressed gratitude towards Dr. Antoine Farhat, Vice-President for University Advancement, Dr. Dany Samaha, Dean of the FLPS, and Dr. Michel Hayek, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, for their attendance and oversight of the event's organization.

In his address, Bou Hadir examined the intrinsic link found between the current volatile political situation and the upcoming Lenten season. He highlighted the importance of acknowledging that “to Dust we shall return”, meaning that even the most turbulent of times being witnessed in the country are but fleeting moments in the grand scheme of things. A brief documentary showcasing the University’s legacy was then displayed, in an effort to acquaint attendees with NDU’s long-lived history, mission, and objectives. Bou Hadir then gave the stage to Dr. Dany Samaha, who in turn provided guests with a brief overview of the Deputies’ recent achievements and acted as the event’s moderator, setting the stage for the discussion to begin.

In an enriching exchange of ideas, the MPs addressed current Lebanese issues and responded to numerous students’ interventions, hence displaying a high level of professionalism and proactivity. MP Dr. Michel Douaihy, who was first granted the floor to speak, highlighted the University’s role in shaping the stance of the youth towards politics. Dr. Douaihy stressed on NDU’s noble mission to foster respect among young people, shedding light on the necessity of raising an upcoming generation that looks past others’ differences and seeks to achieve the common good. Dr. Douaihy also reminded attendees that change is gradual and needs a considerable amount of time to be instilled within society. For that reason, he consistently motivated young people present to never lose hope and actively call for change, all while maintaining a positive and respectful attitude towards all ideologies.

For his part, MP Mark Daou mentioned the difficulty of rebuilding Lebanon at a time where most of its workforce and citizens have already left or are in the process of leaving the country. He encouraged the audience to preserve their critical thinking skills, restating the necessity of asking the right questions in the political realm. Moreover, MP Daou underscored the need for a consensus to follow when enacting laws, noting that its absence has forced non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and syndicates to carry out the Lebanese government’s regular duties. MP Daou also highlighted the urgency of equipping Lebanese citizens with the confidence needed to navigate the political life, as this would eventually motivate them to become driving forces for change.

As for MP Waddah Sadek, the Deputy reiterated the importance of speaking out against injustice rather than remaining silent. MP Sadek illustrated his point by recounting his colleagues’ efforts to equip the Lebanese Parliament with much needed technological devices, even amidst an unparalleled economic crisis. Furthermore, MP Waddah Sadek emphasized that the endowment of an impartial and objective local judicial system is the only way for Lebanon to achieve prosperity and growth. However, as MP Sadek mentioned, the responsibility of building a better Lebanon starts with every individual. From respecting basic traffic rules to calling for a just system, each Lebanese citizen must assume certain duties that bring us closer to a thriving Lebanon.

Following the individual talks of the parliamentary members, the forum allowed for students’ interventions to be made. NDU students expressed their collective concerns regarding their country, and each MP answered a question, illustrating their reasoning with real-life examples and scenarios. The Deputies also ended the dynamic session on a high note, each recounting their humble beginnings and motivating the younger generation to actively participate in the political field. In their own words, the Deputies advised the students to relentlessly pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting these might seem to be.

“Never let anyone suppress your voice or concern. Always voice out your opinions, and never grant someone the luxury of making choices in your place,” the MPs finally concluded.

At the end of the discussion, Dr. Dany Samaha, Dean of the FLPS, restated the University’s prominent role in influencing political engagement among the younger generation. He also recalled NDU’s consistent efforts to raise upcoming advocates for justice. Dr. Samaha finally thanked the esteemed Deputies for their valuable insight and visit, noting that this memorable event will certainly prompt future discourse and additional engaging discussions.
