They say, “adventure is the best way to learn,” and that’s exactly what NDU’s exchange students seek when they approach the Office of International Relations (OIR). The OIR aims to develop and manage academic cooperation programs with universities, associations, and organizations worldwide. Hovig Chavoushian, a Computer Science student, shares his memorable experience in the Global UGRAD program at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, during the Spring 2024 semester.

Hovig was one of four representatives from Lebanon selected to attend the Global UGRAD exchange program, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by World Learning. With guidance from the OIR, his application process went smoothly from start to finish. By taking courses in Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Musical Theater Appreciation, and Introduction to Comparative Politics, Hovig returned with a wealth of academic and cultural knowledge. His studies in computer science enhanced his existing skills, providing him with the tools to become more professional in his field. He also gained new perspectives on various topics, including the American view on world politics, particularly concerning Lebanon, and explored an artistic scene very different from his own.

“I felt like I was playing a role in a movie,” reveals Hovig, who was captivated by college life, the thrill of attending basketball and football games, and the vibrant campus atmosphere. Even the mascots were just as he had imagined. Besides the enhanced education he received at the University of Arkansas, the highlight for Hovig was making friends from all over the world, including the USA, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Japan, Panama, and other countries. This valuable exchange allowed him to break down cultural barriers surrounding Lebanon while also learning about other cultures. During the End of Program Workshop in Washington, D.C., Hovig was proud to be one of the 162 UGRAD participants from 53 different countries.

As a finale to his journey, Hovig had the opportunity to showcase both his Armenian and Lebanese roots in a traditional dance during the “Take the Stage” performance. Today, when asked about his experience, Hovig can vividly describe what it’s like to be an exchange student and feels the profound impact it has had on every project he undertakes and every person he meets.
