Venturing into the frontiers of mathematical research, the 11th annual conference of the Lebanese Society for the Mathematical Sciences (LSMS) convened on June 7 and 8 at Notre Dame University-Louaize’s (NDU) Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences (FNAS). Attendees included the FNAS Interim Dean Dr. Roger Nakad, LSMS President Dr. Rachel Hobeika, the conference’s organizing and scientific committees, international and national guests and speakers, along with faculty, staff, and students from various universities in Lebanon. The conference buzzed with scholarly exchange and intellectual enthusiasm as participants engaged in rigorous mathematical discussions, shared groundbreaking research, and networked with peers from across the mathematical spectrum. This event not only facilitated knowledge dissemination but also fostered a sense of academic camaraderie and mutual growth within the vibrant mathematical community of Lebanon and beyond.
The opening session on June 7 featured an address by Dr. Nakad, who expressed gratitude to the audience and speakers for their participation and interest in the conference, highlighting the significance of the research in mathematics in Lebanon. Dr. Nakad then introduced Dr. Hobeika, who emphasized the importance of promoting and developing mathematical sciences in Lebanon through seminars, conferences, publications, and various research and teaching activities. The day's proceedings began with a plenary lecture by Dr. Youssef Raffoul from the University of Dayton, Ohio, USA, followed by presentations from invited speakers from France, Belgium, and Lebanon. Two additional talks were delivered by Dr. Fawzi Triki from Grenoble Alpes University and Dr. Wissam Raji from the American University of Beirut, covering topics ranging from numerical analysis and difference equations to partial differential equations, analysis, and number theory.
On June 8, Dr. Badih Ghazi, a research scientist at Google USA, presented his latest research and its relation to artificial intelligence. The day continued with talks from renowned researchers, PhD candidates, and Master’s students.
The conference concluded successfully with a note from the chair of the organizing committee, Dr. Mariette Maroun, Chairperson of the Mathematics Department, who highlighted the diversity of talks and presentations from various fields of mathematics and their significant value to students and researchers in the discipline.
In closing, the 11th annual LSMS conference showcased the robust and vibrant mathematical community in Lebanon. This year's successful conference lays the foundation for ongoing innovation and academic excellence, promising even greater contributions to the field in the future.
