On February 2, Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU) second-year Interior Design students took part in a renovation competition organized by Le Royal Hotel, aiming to redesign the company’s restaurant. The competition provided students with a platform to showcase their creativity, innovation, and design competencies, all within the framework of a rich cultural and educational exchange. Accompanied and supervised by Dr. Rina Shebaby, Assistant Professor at the Ramez G. Chaghoury Faculty of Architecture, Arts, and Design (FAAD), NDU Interior Design students, Yasmina Kiwan, Jade El Tayar, and Carelle Merheb were able to secure the win, putting their skills to the test and demonstrating proficiency and vast knowledge in the field.
Seeking to capture the beauty of sunsets in their design, the team envisioned a space where the restaurant’s guests could immerse themselves in the warm hues and tranquil ambiance of a setting sun reflected on the sea’s rippling water. Their end design incorporated warm tones of orange, pink, and gold. These colors were strategically infused into the interior elements, from the furnishings to the artwork, creating an inviting and serene atmosphere.
As for the emulation of gentle tidal movements, the design introduces elements that mimic the rippling reflections of the setting sun. Students had to carefully pick materials, patterns, and lighting that perfectly portray the play of light on water. When it comes to the restaurant’s layout, it was also meticulously planned to optimize the panoramic views of the sea. Each seating area provides an uninterrupted line of sight to the horizon, allowing guests to bask in the natural beauty of the sunset while enjoying their dining experience.
The competition, which brought together students from various universities, proved to be an insightful and enlightening experience for participants. NDU's team, comprised of Yasmina Kiwan, Jade El Tayar, and Carelle Merheb, succeeded in demonstrating its unique vision and professionalism during the resourceful event. From appealing to judges and industry professionals to carefully crafting their designs, NDU students were able to watch their revolutionary ideas come to life.
Dr. Rina Shebaby, who supervised the work of the Interior Design students, also expressed immense pride in the students' achievement, stating, "This experience is a testament to the exceptional talent and hard work of our interior design students. It was a collaborative effort that showcased the strength of our program and the potential of our students to excel in the real-world challenges of the design industry. It reflects the high standards of education and training they receive at Notre Dame University."
The winning design not only impressed judges with its aesthetic appeal but also addressed practical considerations, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The students' ability to meet the specific needs of Le Royal Hotel while introducing their creative flair set them apart in the competition.
The achievement not only brings honor to the University but also highlights NDU's commitment to fostering a dynamic and competitive learning environment. This accomplishment is an indication to the University's dedication to providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their respective fields.
The University looks forward to seeing the continued success of its students as they embark on promising careers in the world of interior design.
