The 12th Notre Dame University–Louaize International Film Festival (NDUIFF) opening ceremony was held on November 25, 2018, in Bechara el-Rai Theater, at the University main campus. This edition was an evidence of the determination to support the power of youth in all circumstances.
The NDUIFF had the privilege to welcome the inspiring actress Julia Kassar who was honored in recognition of her outstanding cinematic and theatrical journey.
Actors, directors, producers, students, and famous faces from the footlights attended the opening ceremony.
For its 12th edition, the screening of “The spoken silence in Julia’s eyes” which compiled epic screen moments from her career moved the audience tremendously followed by a documentary in which she revealed hidden gems of her personality.
Also screened were the promotional and introductory videos about the festival’s program, selection, international guests and jury members.
During his keynote address, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at NDU Dr. Kamal Abou Chedid said, “This year, we are honored to have Ms. Julia Kassar among us representing the power of youth and the adults, and the voice of the voiceless.” He highlighted the mission of NDUIFF by saying: “The work of the NDUIFF over the years has been replete with examples of empowerment, and reaching out to the vulnerable is at the heart of the mission of NDU”.
NDUIFF Founding Director Sam Lahoud said, “This year, we have witnessed many challenges, and it is clear that funding becomes a concern, but we chose to continue, persevere and work harder” ...Our choice was to continue, never giving up is at the essence of the festival which is reflected by the presence of Julia Kasser among us.”
Kassar was awarded the golden olive award and a symbolic token of appreciation, and a Theater chair was named after her.
Kassar’s words reinforced the festival’s vocation: “I salute the festival’s organizing team and volunteers for their work, I am touched by this recognition that I share today with my family, students, the Lebanese University and everyone who still believe in the power of youth and in the beauty of arts.”
