Mission

The mission of the MA in English Language and Literature is to enhance students' expertise in English literature and the mechanics of the English language. Graduates are equipped with essential analytical and conceptual tools for advanced graduate studies in English or for pursuing careers in foreign language teaching, program administration, and communications.

 

Program Educational Objectives

The program will prepare students to:

  1. 1.Develop an understanding of the process of foreign language acquisition and language learning;
  2. 2.Build on their academic and professional experiences to make the link between linguistic theory and actual practice;
  3. 3.Master pedagogical principles of course design, curriculum development, and language assessment in teaching English as a foreign language; and
  4. 4. Become researchers and reflect on Applied Linguistics as an academic field of inquiry.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon graduation, students should be able to:

  1. 1.Apply leading theories of second language learning and acquisition;
  2. 2.Analyze their academic and professional experiences in light of the theories and latest trends in the field of second language acquisition;
  3. 3.Demonstrate the application of pedagogical skills in writing instructional objectives, effectively planning classroom instruction, developing teaching material, and assessing learning;
  4. 4.Plan research studies, collect and analyze data, and draw theoretical and practical conclusions using appropriate tools and methods; and
  5. 5.Construct a code of ethics to guide their professional and personal lives.

 

Admission Requirements

Preference is given to applicants with additional qualifications and professional experience, such as teaching. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English before their application will be considered; a minimum score of 60 on the English Entrance Test (EET) is required for admission. For those who take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), proof of satisfactory performance is also required.

 

Graduation Requirements

To meet the requirements for the MA in English Language and Literature with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics and TEFL, students must complete a total of 30 credits, maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. This includes submitting and defending a thesis. The minimum passing grade for any graduate course is "C." Students must also maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in all graduate courses, with no more than two grades of "C" allowed throughout the program.
